Meet Ella Our 2019 Champion

Ella is TMC for Children, Children’s Miracle Network 2019 Champion! She has Type 1 diabetes and will advocate for the charitable need of children’s hospitals like TMC for Children.

It started on a Friday, while Ella was in preschool. She began feeling lethargic and breathing so fast she couldn’t even walk. Her pediatrician examined Ella and called ahead to TMC for Children. The head PICU physician immediately determined Ella was in DKA, or diabetic ketoacidosis, because of uncontrolled Type 1 diabetes.

That was more than seven years ago. Now, instead of preschool, Ella is finishing fifth grade. She is involved in gymnastics, tumbling, running 5Ks, and she is thinking about becoming both a veterinarian and an architect. She loves horses and all kinds of furry or feathered beasts. Ella works on the small farm at her school whenever possible, and is responsible for keeping her two beloved guinea pigs healthy without much help from Mom and Dad.

She has already been taking care of herself at school for more than two years. She changes out her insulin pump every three days and her monitor, every seven days. Her friends at the TMCOne Pediatric Endocrinology Clinic encourage her to make good diet and exercise choice  as well as help her troubleshoot diabetes issues. She is learning how to be the best, healthiest girl she can be.
